Weekly Objectives for the Week of October 1st-5th

September30

Can you believe it is October already?!  Time is flying by!  We accomplished quite a bit in the month of September.  This month we will be having 4 assemblies, participating in Wellness Week, visiting with the Mayor of Millville, and learning about fire safety from the Millville Fire Department.  This week we will be having a grammar quiz on Wednesday about the 4 types of sentences, subjects, predicates, and direct objects.  We will also be having a math test on Wednesday covering patterns.  For the math test you can have your child log in to the Pearson Successnet website and review the material in topic 2.  Examples of what to study for grammar are listed below:

Types of sentences:

Command/Imperative:  Please take the garbage out.  (gives a command, ends with a period, may have the implied “you” as its subject)

Declarative/Statement: It is chilly out today.  (states a fact or opinion, ends with a period)

Interrogative/Question: Will you be going to the football game this weekend? (asks something, ends with a question mark, usually starts with who, where, when, what, did, or how)

Exclamatory: Wow, that was an amazing kick!  (expresses a strong emotion, ends with an exclamation point)

This weeks learning objectives:

Vocabulary: Students will be able to define and use vocabulary words in context.

Grammar: Students will be able to identify prepositions (words that tell how, when, what, how much, or where about something in a sentence.  Ex: in, of, on, under, to, across, around, over) and prepositional phrases in sentences.

Reading:  Students will be able to determine the author’s purpose in writing a piece of literature.  Students will read for fluency and comprehension.

Examples of Author’s Purpose:

Inform- to tell about something, to teach something  Ex: an article in the paper, non fiction books, text books, instructions to make something

Entertain- written for the reader’s enjoyment. Ex:  comic books, fiction novels, poetry

Persuade- written to try to convince the reader to think or feel the way the author does about something.  Ex:  advertisements, opinion pieces, election speeches.

Math: Students will be able to recognize and describe patterns.  Students will be able to read and write 3-4 digit numbers.  Students will be able to relate numbers in place value situations to each other. (for example, they will be able to understand that the 2 in 3,240 is the hundreds digit which means it is the same as 20 tens)

Science: Students will test hypotheses about mock rocks by deconstructing them and testing what is found inside.  Students will record data and use it to come to conclusions.

Social Studies: Students will interview the mayor of Millville.  Students will identify main elements of local government and how they interact with each other.

Writing: Students will create informational pamphlets about bullying.
